Red Storm softball upsets Chiefs in playoffs

SARANAC LAKE — Kylee Meyer hit a two-run shot over the left field fence in the fifth inning and the Saranac Lake softball team stunned the Saranac Central Chiefs 5-3 on the road Wednesday in the first round of the Section VII Class B playoffs.

“No one thought Saranac Lake would take the win tonight,” Red Storm head coach Gabby Lewis said in a statement. “But the players’ determination and ability shined through tonight.”

Despite falling to the Chiefs 13-3 on April 30, in the only matchup of the season between the two squads, Saranac Lake came ready to play on Wednesday in their first playoff game.

Tailor Whitson was outstanding at the plate for the Red Storm, recording three singles. Meyer, Emma Akey and Alex Whitson recorded two hits each. Saranac Lake finished with 12 hits combined.

Karlie Goetz pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters in the win. Saranac’s Hailee Liberty also went the distance, striking out four Red Storm batters.

“The game was tight from the start, both pitchers working hard in the circle and the field making some great plays,” Lewis said.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but were held scoreless over the course of the next three innings.

Saranac Lake took the lead in the top of the third inning after scoring two runs on four hits. The Red Storm then tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning.

Saranac Central scored twice in the back half of the fifth, but couldn’t get things going in later innings and ultimately fell.

“These girls played with so much heart and finally showed off the talent they have had within them all year long,” Lewis said.

With the win, Saranac Lake improves to 3-8 on the season. The Red Storm will take on the number one seed, the Plattsburgh Hornets, in the Class B semifinal matchup on the road today at 4:30 p.m.
