TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake baseball team continued its dominating league play with an 18-1 home victory over the Brushton-Moira Panthers in five innings Wednesday afternoon.

It was the second win in a row that the Lumberjacks hitters topped their opponents by an 18-1 score. The team defeated Norwood-Norfolk by that score on Monday.

“I guess consistency is key in sports, so I guess two 18-1 wins in a row is a nice way to do that,” Tupper Lake head coach Dan Brown said. “Brushton made some plays in the field against us that other teams have not made, but when our guys come ready to keep their weight back and hit the ball and make the defensive plays, I think we’ve got a pretty special group here.”

The Lumberjacks scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead, due to two-run RBI singles from Luke Robillard and Mason Fowler. The team scored seven runs in the third inning and six in the fourth.

Robillard had three hits for Tupper Lake, while Ryder Willett had two extra-base hits — a double and a triple. Fowler, Wyatt Godin and Griffin Shaheen also had a multi-hit game. The team had 14 total hits on a night when every single Tupper Lake batter reached base at least once.

“There’s nothing in the sport that feels better when everyone contributes in some way,” Brown said. “I like when that happens, when we get everyone in and get everybody on base or around if we can. We just hope to keep that going over the next three-and-half weeks until the end of the season.”

Brushton-Moria scored its lone run in the top of the first when Broc Allen singled and was driven in on an RBI single from Tristan Russell. The Panthers finished the contest with four total hits, two came off the bat of Dustin Barse.

After giving up the first run of the ball game, the Lumberjacks’ starting pitcher, Godin, struck out five of the next seven batters he faced to earn the win. Godin recorded six punchouts before being relieved by Cooper Cuttaia in the top of the fifth. Cuttaia had one strikeout.

“Wyatt’s got this slow professional approach to the plate, and the ball just sneaks up on the batters,” Brown said. “He knows how to get the ball around the plate and put it places where it’s going to be tough to hit. If they do hit, it’s going to be hit with the end of the bat or maybe the handle. It’s the second start this year where he has kept the other team to one run or less with five or more strikeouts. As a junior, he’s taken on a leadership role and it’s setting us up for success.”

Tupper Lake has outscored Section X opponents by a combined score of 58-2 in three games. The team is now 3-2 overall, with its two losses coming against Peru and Saranac Central of Section VII.

“We scheduled some non-league games that we knew were going to be tough for us, starting with Peru and Saranac Central,” Brown said. “Peru is always a tough one, Saranac Central, we played — I thought — a pretty good ball game. They just hit the ball where we weren’t in the seventh and that took that one away from us. Norwood is always a heck of a ball club and we played a great game against them on Monday.”

The Lumberjack squad is hoping to continue its league success in a doubleheader against Chateaugay today on the road. The first game is set for a 4 p.m. start.

Lake Placid 9, Crown Point 4

In rematch of last season’s Section VII, Class D championship game, the Lake Placid baseball team defeated the Crown Point Panthers 9-4 on the road Wednesday to improve to 2-0 overall.

The Blue Bombers’ Jon Caito had four hits and earned the win on the mound while striking out seven Panthers batters. Owen Hayes pitched the final two innings to seal the victory.

On a night when the Lake Placid batters recorded 12 hits, the team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and seemingly never looked back. Jarrett Mihill and Owen Thomsen notched a pair of hits and drove in three runs each.

Crown Point’s Evan Carey earned the pitching loss, while recording seven strikeouts. Carey and Kayden Hurlburt each had two hits. The Panthers, which dropped to 1-2 overall, had seven total hits.

The Blue Bombers, which record its 16th straight Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference victory dating back to May 13, 2022, will take on the Bolton Eagles at 4:30 p.m. today on the road in a league matchup.
