SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team was defeated 6-1 by the Beekmantown Eagles on Wednesday at Schroeter’s Field.

In the first half, the Red Storm were able to keep up with the Eagles until the first goal was scored around the mid-way point of the half. Beekmantown’s Grace McCasland scored the first goal to give the team a 1-0 lead.

Beekmantown’s Kiera Regan and Evelyn Roberts followed with goals of their own to end the half 3-0.

The second half started similarly. The Eagles scored three straight goals. Goals were scored by Payton Parliamont, Regan and McCasland.

On the brink of being shut out at home for the second time this season, Saranac Lake’s Ayla Small found the back of the net. The lone goal for the Red Storm came off an assist from Lydia Wamsganz.

Saranac Lake’s Karlie Goetz and Alex Whitson had strong performances in net. The two had a combined 23 saves.

“Beekmantown was a good team,” Saranac Lake coach Jason Wamsganz said in a statement. “We shut some things down early that they were trying to do and played a very tight back-and-forth game for 20 plus minutes.

“They started moving the ball better and eventually were able to capitalize on us being pulled out of position. Although we were only able to get five shots off, we did have the ball deep in their end many times, but just couldn’t finish on a few good chances.”

The Red Storm will likely look to build off the strong finish going forward into the season. The team will host Ausable Valley today at 4:30 p.m.
