Saranac Lake beats AuSable Valley

Rivers fans 11 as Red Storm improves to 3-0

Saranac Lake’s baseball team improved to 3-0 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play with an 8-5 victory on the road Saturday against AuSable Valley.

Each team scored twice in their first at bat, and the Red Storm grabbed the lead for good with a four-run second inning.

Freshman Cedar Rivers had a standout pitching performance in the victory, scattering four hits and striking out 11 Patriots batters. Rivers worked six and one-third innings before reaching the pitch count limit. He was replaced by Carter Sturgeon, who fanned two batters for the last two outs of the game.

The Red Storm pounded out 11 hits in the win. David Warner led the way with a pair of singles and a double. Also for Saranac Lake, lead-off batter Will Woodruff added two singles and two RBIs, Carter Sturgeon singled twice, Landon Faubert had a single and a double and Rivers chipped in a pair of singles.

Saranac Lake has now scored 24 runs in its three victories.

“3-0, it’s a great place to be, and the thing I like about our kids is every game, they are just trying to go 1-0.” said Red Storm head coach Eric Bennett. “We have a nice balance between our seniors and our younger players, and so far they’ve been getting the job done.

“We’ll see how that continues because we’re getting into the meat of the competition,” Bennett continued. “We haven’t played the bigger schools yet, and I think every game against the B teams is going to be tough.”

Saranac Lake will be at home on Petrova Avenue Thursday for its next matchup, hosting rival Lake Placid with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
