Lake Placid hoops teams split at home

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid High School basketball teams salvaged a split at home Friday in a doubleheader against Seton Catholic.

The Blue Bombers girls fell 25-20 in the opening game to even their record at 1-1. Lake Placid’s boys then got off to another fast start to claim a 51-32 win over the Knights to improve to 1-1.

For the second game in a row, Lake Placid’s boys rolled to a big lead at halftime. After building up a 28-2 edge at intermission in their opening night win over Chazy, the Blue Bombers grabbed a 23-12 lead over Knights after one quarter of play, and then held Seton Catholic to just a single point in the second period to while taking a 31-13 advantage at the half. Lake Placid tacked on 20 more points in the second half.

Senior Matt Brandes paced Lake Placid with 13 points, junior Jack Armstrong chipped in 12 in the win and Zach Gavin added nine points. Eight players got in the scoring column for the Blue Bombers.

Aiden Pearl led Seton Catholic with a game-high 15 points.

In the low-scoring girls game, the Blue Bombers clung to a 9-8 lead at halftime but could not hold on.

Haley Murnane paced the Knights as the only scorer to hit in double figures in the game. Murnane finished with 11 points in a performance that included knocking down a trio of three-pointers.

Deidra Kellerman led Lake Placid with seven points and Arnita Cecunjanin added four points in the loss.

The setback came a day after the Blue Bombers girls had a strong offensive effort during a 45-39 triumph over Chazy in their first matchup of the condensed season. In that game, which was on the road, Kellerman and Cecunjanin drained 10 points apiece to pace Lake Placid, and Natalie Tavares, Nadia Phillip and Katie Coursen added eight points each in the win.

Lake Placid held a 23-21 edge and outscored Chazy 22-18 the rest of the way.
