Sec. X moving ahead with some fall sports

CANTON — The 24 school districts that comprise Section 10 will be moving forward with low- and moderate-risk fall sports with practices starting as early as Sept. 21.

This decision will include boys and girls soccer and cross country. Although swimming is considered a low-risk sport, there will only be two of the eight pools available for the Fall I timeline.

“We had two districts that had pools that just needed to be certified by the department of health that hasn’t happened yet,” Section 10 Executive Director Carl Normandin said. “We’ve also had three schools that are in a remote learning educational program, so those individual schools would not be eligible to practice at this point.”

Junior varsity and modified teams will be considered one week after the varsity start up. There are also currently no plans on holding a sectional postseason, as the focus for Section 10 has been on getting Fall I up and running.

“Over the course of the next week or so, I think we’ll have a better idea of where we are with league play and if there’s going to be any type of postseason play,” Normandin said.

With Section 10 greenlighting the Sept. 21 start date, it doesn’t mean that all schools will start then. With remote learning, as well as school districts giving their own timelines, some schools will begin later than the Sept. 21.

“I think we’ve achieved a monumental movement forward and when it’s all said and done,” Normandin said, “everybody’s looking out for what’s best for the health and welfare of our student-athletes and our school communities.”
