NYSEF alumni reunite on college circuit

New York Ski Educational Foundation alumni were out in force Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Nordic skiing races in Craftsbury, Vermont.

Lake Placid High School graduate Karl Schulz notched his second first place finish of the season when he took the top spot in the men’s race. He is a racer for the University of Vermont. His brother, Scott Schulz, who attends University of New Hampshire, wasn’t far behind with a fifth-place finish, which was the best result of his collegiate career.

Other former NYSEF skiers in the race were Bryce Hartman, of Saranac Lake and Henry McGrew, of Lake Placid. Hartman, a UNH skier, took 11th and McGrew placed 16th for Williams College.

In the women’s race, NYSEF alumni Jackie Garso and Lucy Hochschartner were representing St. Lawrence University. Garso, of Saranac Lake, took 11th place and Hochschartner, of Lake Placid, was 15th.

Current NYSEF racers were also in attendance in Craftsbury as the Junior cross-country skiing athletes were motivated to keep up with the alumni. The following are other notable NYSEF results from the weekend:

Saturday, Jan. 25

U18 Men, skate

Van Ledger (Lake Placid), placed sixth

Kai Frantz (Lake Placid), placed seventh

Sunday, Jan. 26

U18 Women, classic

Marli Damp (Lake Placid), placed 13th

U18 Men, classic

Kai Frantz placed 16th

Mike Skutt placed 20th

Next up is the Junior National Qualifier in Rochester, New York on Friday and Saturday.

ALPINE

Sonja Toishi, of Lake Placid, outraced the competition Monday, Jan. 20 at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. giant slalom race at the Sugarbush Resort at Mt. Ellen in Vermont.

Toishi, a member of NYSEF, was racing against the top under-16 skiers in the East.

Fellow NYSEF athlete Rowen Norfolk placed sixth in the boys race.

JUMPING

On Saturday, Feb. 1, the NYSEF Youth Jump Team is holding a benefit to raise monty for ski jumping equipment. NYSEF is asking each athlete to have at least one donor to pledge a dollar amount for each meter the athlete jumps. The longest competition jump of the day will be the fundraiser.
