SLP girls top Canton for 3rd place

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Placid girls hockey team didn’t claim the tournament title it hoped for over the weekend as the host of two days of action at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.

That honor belonged to the Plattsburgh Hornets, who edged Ithaca 1-0 in Saturday’s championship game.

But SLP’s girls did pick up a much-needed win, getting past Canton 4-3 Saturday in the consolation matchup. Sophomore Sydney Dann netted two goals to lead SLP, and Rylee Preston and Karlie Goetz each tallied once in the win.

Canton opened the scoring early in the game, and SLP answered with the next three goals and stayed on top the rest of the way.

SLP buried two pucks in the first period to lead 2-1, and held a 3-1 edge entering the third. The young Golden Bears kept things tight down the stretch. They scored just 15 seconds into the third period to cut their deficit to 3-2, and then made it a one-goal game again with a late tally after SLP had taken a 4-2 advantage.

Goetz netted what proved to be the game-winner, scoring with 4:47 remaining to give SLP its second two-goal cushion of the contest.

SLP’s last victory was a 3-1 triumph on the road over Skaneateles on Dec. 13, and since then the team has lost three and tied two. Included in the setbacks was a 3-0 loss to Ithaca Friday night in the tournament’s opening round.

“That was a win we needed,” Saranac Lake coach Bill Peer said. “We played everybody and we really tried to roll everybody. I thought we had good energy, we responded to that early deficit and we kept going. I thought we played good two-way hockey back and forth.

Lucy DeCoteau put Canton on the board first, scoring 1:50 into the game with Emily Estabrooks assisting. Preston and Dann netted the next two goals. Preston, a junior, knotted the score at 1-1 on a shot from the point 4:07 into the opening period. Dann put SLP on top 2-1 with 4:09 left in the first when she chipped a shot from in close through traffic and into the back of the net.

Dann then gave SLP its 3-1 edge on the lone goal of the second, which came 1:01 into the period.

Canton got a big jump to start the third, as Ava Murphy scored seconds into the period to make it a 3-2 game. But Goetz, a freshman, came through late, converting a pass from Mady Gay to give the hosts some breathing room with a 4-2 lead. Canton’s Quinn Woodward rounded out the scoring on a goal with 1:42 remaining in regulation to make it a 4-3 final.

SLP finished with a 27-17 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Brooke Paries was solid in nets for SLP, finishing with 14 saves to earn the win. Eighth-grader Mackenzie Wiggins also had an impressive performance between the pipes for Canton, finishing with 24 saves.

Gay finished with two assists, and Rylee Preston and Ireland Preston had one assist each for SLP.

“We capitalized a bit more going to the net then we have been — putting pucks at the net and going to the net,” Peer added. “I’m pleased that our girls came back on a short rest and got a win. It was a good hockey game. Canton is a little young this year, and they kept it close. They made it tight, didn’t they?”

SLP improved to 3-4-3 overall with the win and next plays Jan. 7 on the road against Potsdam.

Canton, which has one senior and one junior and the rest sophomores and younger, fell to 0-8 overall.
