Skutt, Kelting lead SL-LP Nordic ski meet

SARANAC LAKE — Lake Placid senior Mike Skutt took top honors in boys Nordic ski racing Wednesday, finishing first in Wednesday’s high school matchup between the Blue Bombers and Saranac Lake.

The races were held at Saranac Lake’s Dewey Mountain Ski Center, and Skutt skied into first place in the varsity contest, finishing the 3-kilometer course in 8 minutes, 22 seconds. Red Storm skiers took the next three spots, with Nick Kelting finishing runner-up in 8:30, Adrian Hayden placing third in 8:31 and Colter Cheney-Seymour taking fourth in 8:35. Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio and Max Flanigan were fifth and sixth with respective 9:09 and 9:48 finish times.

The rest of the boys’ field of 13 competitors was comprised of Saranac Lake skiers. Reuben Bernstein finished seventh and was followed by Griffin Smith, Sam Ash, Jasper Weich, Aidan Hesseltine, Morgan Martin and Jacob Duryea.

In the girls varsity race, a trio of skiers finished within nine seceonds of each other to grab the top three spots. Saranac Lake took first and second, with Sophia Kelting claiming the win in 10:25 and Sylvie Linck finishing as runner-up one second back. Lake Placid’s Annie Rose-McCandlish placed third in 10:34. Saranac Lake’s Evelyn Eller was the other skier to break the 11-minute mark, placing fourth in 10:58. Bella Wissler of the Red Storm rounded out the top five.

Lake Placid’s Lynn Palen placed sixth, and teammate Anya Morgan finished seventh. Saranac Lake skied to the next two positions with Annelise Dramm placing eighth and Ruby Smith finishing ninth. Alexa Harper of Lake Placid placed 10th, and Sydney Lawrence of the Blue Bombers rounded out the girls field in 11th place.
