Mountaineers prep on home turf

SARANAC LAKE — Six teams were in action Saturday as the Mountaineers Rugby Club hosted a tournament on home turf at the Spencer Boatworks pitch.

The Mountaineers were represented by three squads. In the men’s group, the local club split into two sides, the Mountaineers and the Brothers — to take on Saratoga and Syracuse. All four teams competed in two games of 10s rugby.

In women’s action, the Mountaineers squared off against Upper Valley, New Hampshire in three matches of 15s rugby.

The Brothers, finished as the only unbeaten team on a day that featured some competitive matches. The Brothers went 2-0 with a 24-19 win over Syracuse followed by a 33-17 victory over Saratoga. The Mountaineers lost their two contests, falling 20-5 against Syracuse and dropping a 24-15 decision to Saratoga.

The Mountaineers women finished with a 2-1 record against Upper Valley, posting 12-0 and 19-0 victories and falling by a 12-5 score.

Saturday was the last time the Mountaineers competed at home as they gear up for the 46th Annual Can-Am Rugby Tournament taking place in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid Aug. 2-4. The Mountaineers men are the two-time defending champions in the men’s social division.

The Mountaineers men and women have one more day of competition prior to hosting the Can-Am tournament, when they travel to play at Upper Valley, New Hampshire on July 13.
