SARANAC LAKE — Members of the Pickreign family are avid golfers, persistent golfers and really enjoy spending time together, especially when they are on the course.

On Saturday, May 20, at Southampton Country Club in Massachusetts, a Pickreign foursome including three generations of their family pulled off something they’ve been looking to do for 23 years. For the first time, Saranac Lake natives John Pickreign, his son Larry, his son Larry and Massachusetts resident Richard Pickreign won the trophy with their family’s name attached to it.

They shot a 5-under par 67 to win the Dick Pickreign Open, which is a four-person scramble that benefits the Wounded Warrior Project.

The tournament is held in memory of Dick Pickreign, John’s brother who passed away in 1993. Every year, family members travel from the North Country to play in the tournament, and they broke through this time around to claim the win.

“We were hot,” John Pickreign said, and then added with a smile “We hit trees and balls ended up on the green. That’s how you win tournaments — some good golf and a little bit of luck. We finally got our names on the cup.”

The elder Larry Pickreign, who is the director of the annual Stringer Memorial Golf Tournament held each June at the Saranac Lake Golf Club in Ray Brook, said his team really picked up its play on the back nine, and added that it’s nice to win for the first time in 23 attempts.

“It’s pretty cool that that dad, Richard and I have been there every year,” he said.

The North Country contingent, which this year included John, Larry and Larry, makes the three-and-a-half hour drive to join Richard, who is Dick’s son, every May for the event. Normally, the group stays at the home of Dick’s surviving wife, Sandy, but it was a quick trip this year, as they returned to Saranac Lake on the same day following the tournament.

In addition to Sandy and Richard, Dick, a former Saranac Laker, is also survived by three other daughters, Debbie, Cindy and Cherrie, who all live in Massachusetts.
