Zurek recognized for athletics

TUPPER LAKE – Katie Zurek, a multi-sport senior at Tupper Lake High School, was awarded the Wendy’s High School Heisman award this week.

“Katie is known by her teachers and friends for her commitment to excellence,” Tupper Lake athletics director Scott Cook said. “We are excited and honored that a program like Wendy’s High School Heisman is also recognizing her hard work.”

Zurek participates in track and field, basketball and soccer for the Lumberjacks. She has qualified for multiple state championship meets in discus and shot put for the track team, and is captain of the soccer team.

“The Wendy’s High School Heisman was created by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas in 1994. Dave Thomas dropped out of high school when he was 15 years old in order to work full-time and went on to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in history. While this non-traditional path led to his prosperity, it always worried Dave that others would follow in his footsteps and expect to achieve similar fame and wealth by not finishing high school or attending college,” according to the award’s website.

Zurek was the school winner and will receive a certificate and a Wendy’s High School Heisman patch.

“Participating and winning this recognition award will look great on your college and scholarship applications and your resume,” the award site says. “When students from your school are recognized by Wendy’s High School Heisman, it creates a sense of achievement and accomplishment that’s contagious. Younger students will be inspired to learn, perform and lead. And the entire student body will see the rewards of high achievement in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.”
