Shumway races to second win

PLATTSBURGH – Brittany Shumway won her second race of the season and the Saranac Lake boys cross country team secured two dual meet wins as the Red Storm traveled to Plattsburgh for a meet.

Shumway, a senior, ran past the field to finish in 20 minutes, 7 seconds. Not far behind were the DeJordy sisters who were running for Seton Catholic. Lea DeJordy finished second in 20:23, Sofia DeJordy was second in 20:40 and Savannah DeJordy was third in 22:01.

The Red Storm girls stuck together for the most part. Sierra O’Mahoney was the second Saranac Laker to cross the line with her seventh-place finish in 23:53. She was followed by teammates Maggie Peer in eighth in 24:43, Emma Peer in ninth in 24:45 and Molly Bell in 10th in 25:09.

“Running strong together for the second meet in a row is showing that our girls team is working hard against other teams and working as a unit to propel each other,” Saranac Lake coach Joe Merrihew said.

Seton Catholic won the dual meet team scoring 26-31 over Saranac Lake. The Red Storm beat Plattsburgh 19-40.

In the boys race, sophomore Anderson Gray was Saranac Lake’s top finisher with his second-place showing. Junior teammate Lauchlan Cheney-Seymour wasn’t far behind with his third-place finish in 17:28.

Caleb Moore of Seton Catholic won the boys race with a time of 16:45. Merrihew described Moore as “the best runner in the league.”

Other Saranac Lake scorers were Adam Branch with his fifth-place finish in 18:19, Adam Hesseltine, who finished 10th in 19:16, Jacob Alberga, 11th in 19:21. PJ Buck finished 12th in 19:23.

“Our boys that took 10th, 11th, 12th were only seven seconds apart,” Merrihew said. “When a cross country boys team can pack up boys in the fourth, fifth and sixth scoring positions it locks in the scoring and causes the other team’s score to go up, making it harder for the other teams to win. This is exactly what our boys did today and worked very well together doing so.”

The Red Storm boys beat Seton Catholic 27-30 and Plattsburgh 19-41. The Saranac Lake boys are 5-0, while the girls are 4-1.
