Kenniston, Sturgeon catch fire

LAKE PLACID – Except for a little blip, Korey Kenniston and Kurt Sturgeon experienced what could be considered a magical day on the golf course. The two teamed up to fire a 63 on Tuesday to win the 38th annual Bar Fly Golf Tournament at the Craig Wood Golf Course in Lake Placid.

Kenniston, of Tupper Lake, and Sturgeon, a Saranac Laker, fired a 9-under par round on the layout to win the two-person scramble event by five shots. The only time they didn’t have their mojo working was on the par-3, second hole, where they recorded a double-bogey. On Craig Wood’s other 17 holes, they turned in an impressive 11 birdies and finished with pars the rest of the way to notch the convincing victory. The duo was especially strong on the back nine, finishing with seven birdies and a pair of pars for a 7-under 28.

Second place went to Lake Placid’s Paul Strack and Tom Rath, who finished with a 68. Brian Morgan and Steve Huntsberger, of Park City Utah, who traveled to the Adirondacks to compete in the tournament, finished a shot back in third place with a 69.

“It was one of those days that was like a dream,” Kenniston said. “We couldn’t miss a putt. The ball kept going in the hole.”

“Solid,” is how Sturgeon described his partner. “He played great.”

In addition to winning the tournament, Kenniston also took first place in one of two long-drive competitions for the men. Lake Placid’s Rhett Colby won the other.

Kenniston and Sturgeon said not only did they play well, they enjoyed being teamed up with Gary Konkoski and John Tice for their round.

“Those guys were so much fun,” Kenniston said.

The Lake Placid twosome of Linda Friedlander and Katy Hale won the women’s division with an 83, and Kelly Morgan and Forrest Morgan claimed the mixed division title with a 78.

Hale won the women’s long drive contest, and Kelly Morgan won the women’s closest to the pin on the 17th hole.

Prizes were also up for grabs in men’s closest to the pin contests on all four of Craig Wood’s par-3 holes. Drew Brown won on the second hole, John Morgan won the fourth, Bill Ferebee won on the 13th and Steve Trombley took top honors on the 17th hole.

Eighty-two golfers on 41 teams took part in this year’s Bar Fly tourney.

For the ninth straight year, the Bar Fly Tournament was a fundraising event for the Tri-Lakes Humane Society. John Morgan, who has organized the Bar Fly for 29 years, said the tournament normally raises close to $6,000 each year for the no-kill shelter located in Saranac Lake.

Tournament sponsors again included High Peaks Distributing and Rock Bottom Golf.

And in sticking with tradition, one of the dogs from the shelter that was up for adoption – a nine-year-old mixed breed named Jenny – visited the golfers at the tournament.
