Douglas climbs to rollerski title

WILMINGTON – Robert Duncan Douglas and Hannah Rieders took top honors Sunday in the annual Whiteface Climb to the Castle Rollerski Race organized by the New York Ski Educational Foundation.

Douglas, a two-time Olympian in biathlon from Honeoye Falls, found himself in quite a battle to the finish line and prevailed by less than 10 seconds to take the men’s title. He won the race in 37 minutes, 15.6 seconds, with United States National Team biathlete Russell Currier finishing runner up in 37.23.9.

Sunday marked the third time the 50-year-old Douglas has won the race, with his other two victories coming in 2007 and 2008.

Paul Schommer placed third in 40:18.2, Alec McLean was fourth in 40:56.4 and Kieran Jones rounded out the men’s top five with a 43:27.7 finish.

Rieders was also in a close race in the women’s competition. She won in 55:03.1, with Anna Lehmann following in second place with a 55:18.4 finish time. Madeline Rieders, who is Hannah’s twin sister, grabbed third place in 56:26.4.

Saranac Lake’s Jackie Garso and Gabrielle Vandendries rounded out the women’s top five with respective 57:16.8 and 58:45.8 finish times.
