SARANAC LAKE — With area bragging rights on the line, in the first-ever matchup between the Saranac Lake and Lake Placid girls flag football teams, the Blue Bombers defeated the Red Storm 32-12 at the Wilson Raymond Field Monday afternoon.

Lake Placid freshman Eliza Fitzsimmons scored four touchdowns, while quarterback Anisa Cecunjanin ran in for one en route to the team’s second win of the season. The Blue Bombers previously topped Northern Adirondack on April 26.

“(Fitzsimmons is) just a freshman, so she’s just getting started and the chemistry between her and Anisa is what makes that happen,” Lake Placid head coach Tammy Morgan said. “What was really nice today, was that we had a lot of recievers. We had Willow Wood and we had Brooke Meyer and that just deepens our options, giving them that confidence that they needed going into the next couple of games.”

The Blue Bombers, who were without some of its players due to conflicts with other sports, used a solid rushing attack to the outside and short passes to take down Saranac Lake. Fitzsimmons also rushed for well over the century mark.

“What I liked about today was we added a couple of new plays in the past two games and they’ve given us a lot more options,” Morgan said. “I’m excited today that we had touchdowns with two different quarterbacks. The exciting thing about today’s game, was I didn’t have any of my seniors, so it was kind of a sneak peak for next year of what we might be seeing. We’ve learned a lot. We’ve come a long ways. I think the girls are having fun and that’s really why we are here.”

Lexie Donaldson and Brisa Brunette each scored a touchdown for the Red Storm. Lexee Daunais record two interceptions on senior night, which honored her and teammate Lisa Wilson.

The Blue Bombers scored first halfway through the opening half when Fitzsimmons darted past the Red Storm defense for a 19 yard touchdown.

Following the score, Lake Placid’s Abbey Light hauled in a shovel pass on the extra point attempt from Cecunjanin to put her team up 7-0. After getting the ball back, the Red Storm responded on the very next play when Donaldson took off for a 60 yard score. Saranac Lake, however, was unable to score on the extra-point attempt keeping the score at 7-6.

Cecunjanin ran for a 3-yard touchdown on Lake Placid’s next possession and Fitzsimmons scored once again on a 25-yard carry to close out the first half with a 19-6 lead. The Blue Bombers Abbey Light also intercepted a pass in the final seconds of the half.

After the intermission, Lake Placid extended its lead to 25-6 when Fitzsimmons cut to the outside of the field for a 50 yard touchdown.

The Red Storm scored its second touchdown of the contest when Brunette took a handoff 58 yards. On the Blue Bombers next drive, Fitzsimmons rushed 23 yards for another score. Cecunjanin extended the lead with a one-point conversion run.

With a few minutes remaining in the game, Lake Placid’s Emma Lawrence leaped up for an interception to essentially put the game to rest.

“We knew they’d be passing in the second half, so we switched to a pass coverage defense and that’s something that has been a weak spot for us this year,” Morgan said. “But, I think they really made some stride there. They really did a good job of stopping the pass.”

On one of the final drives for Saranac Lake, Brylee Carter caught a touchdown pass, but the score was called off because a Red Storm player was offsides. The team was unable to convert on its next chance, turning the ball over to Lake Placid.

The loss dropped Saranac Lake’s overall record to 0-8. The team will play the Northeastern Clinton Cougars on the road today at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Bombers will travel to Ellenburg for the opening round of sectionals on Thursday, with matchup against the Northern Adirondack Bobcats at 4:30 p.m.
