Competing on their home track, the Red Storm boys and girls teams both came away with wins over both Lake Placid and Moriah/Boquet Valley. The Saranac Lake boys topped the Blue Bombers 106-21, while topping Moriah/Boquet Valley 118-20.

The Red Storm girls also swept the meet, defeating Moriah/Boquet Valley 115-16 and Lake Placid 83-48.

On the boys’ side, Saranac Lake had a near-sweep of events against the Blue Bombers, taking first in each discipline except for the 3,200-meter race, which was won by Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay.

“We hit numerous (personal records),” Saranac Lake boys track coach Cy Ellsworth said. “It was great to have Lake Placid and their fans at our new track. Our culture is excellent, our work ethic is strong and we are seeing improvements all across the board. We talk a lot to our athletes about controlling the controllables and taking things a day at a time so that at the end of May, we are performing at our best. We will participate in a few of the bigger invitationals in the weeks ahead around the state to better prepare us for reaching our goals.”

Highlights for Saranac Lake included Liam Nobles winning four individual events — the 200, 110 hurdles, long jump and triple jump — and Jake Kollmer narrowly edging out Fay in the 1,600 event. Kollmer also won the 800 and ran a leg in the 1,600 relay, alongside Elijah Schenk, Soren Wolford and Sam Madden.

Wolford also won the 100 dash and ran a leg in the 400 relay, alongside Schenk, Alden Cecunjanin and Everest Wolford. The Red Storm’s 3,200 relay team of Madden, Sam Bickford, Will Tromblee and Keaton Daley also topped the field. Bickford won the 400 and Austin Shoemaker placed first in the 400 hurdles.

Saranac Lake’s Dustin Burke swept the throwing events with a 40-foot, 7.5 throw in the shot put and a 123-1 toss in the discus. In the high jump, the Red Storm’s Alden Cecunjanin edged out Lake Placid’s Theo Harris. Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Jackson Hooper had the best high jump result in the meet.

The victory put the Saranac Lake boys right on track toward the Section VII title, after falling for just the second time this season Tuesday evening. The Red Storm lost to Beekmantown.

“We competed in a rain storm on Tuesday night in Beekmantown and hit 11 PRs but weren’t as competitive as we needed to be in the relays and throws to win the meet,” Ellsworth said. “(But) our boys had an excellent (day) on Saturday at the St. Lawrence Invitational where we finished second out of 17 teams.”

While the girls’ results were a little closer, the Red Storm took home eight of the 16 events.

“We are really happy to have our girls step up in a big way and be rewarded for their efforts,” Saranac Lake girls track coach Jason Wamsganz said. “We kind of hit the injury bug this week and had a few girls out and a few were limited in the number of events they were able to do tonight. That said, we are especially proud of them, they work hard each and every day and are banged up a little, so they should be proud of their complete team effort in performing well and picking up a pair of wins.”

The Red Storm’s Addi Ash had a solid meet, winning two individual events. Ash won the 110 and the 400-meter hurdles.

“She just started the hurdles and is really doing well, credit to her and coach (Peter) Frenette,” Wamsganz said. “Ally Bourgeois had a nice day on the track and in the jumping pits, winning multiple events. Ally is right where we thought she would be at this point in the season.”

Bourgeois won the long jump with a leap of 13-3 and ran a leg in the 400 relay, which consisted of Zuleyka Oliveras, Raiana Baumann and Maddy Stavenhagen.

Saranac Lake’s Georgia McMinn won the high jump with a 4-4 leap and Alice LaDue placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 26-8. The Red Storm’s Clementine Guenette narrowly edged out Lake Placid’s Holly Erenstone in the 800.

Cora Hotchkiss, who announced on Thursday that she plans on competing for the SUNY Brockport track and field team next season, topped the discus field for the Red Storm with a personal record throw. Hotchkiss is nearing the school’s discus record.

“This really was a full team effort today, we had many first-place finishes, but we really stepped up to score seconds and thirds, many of the girls scored points today and many had PRs,” Wamsganz said. “We hope to ride this momentum into next week when we travel to (Plattsburgh).”

Lake Placid’s Kai McKinnon won three events, including the 1,500 and 3,000. She also ran a leg in the 3,200 relay, alongside Erenstone, Harley Cohen and Pia Morrelli. Saranac Lake’s Cadence Kennedy, an eighth-grader, finished in second place in both the 1,500 and 3,000.

“(They) really rocked the 4×800 relay and then came back in their individual events and did an amazing job there as well,” Wamsganz said. “Coach Ash and I are happy for those girls. They showed what they are capable of tonight and that should carry confidence for them as we move forward.”

The Blue Bombers 1,600 relay team of Morrelli, Zarela Gulli, Alexandria Smith and Clara Boutelle also picked up a win. The Red Storm’s 1,600 relay team of Ash, Oliveras, Guenette and Jovie Schenk placed second.

Lake Placid’s Lily Jones won the shot put event with a toss of 26 feet, 8 inches, which edged out Saranac Lake’s Lena DeDivitis by 3 inches.

Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Julianna Riemersma won all three events for her team. Riemersma won the 100, 200 and 400-meter. Saranac Lake’s Bourgeois finished in second place in the 200 in 29.6 seconds and 100 in 14.3. Lake Placid’s Morrelli was second in the 400 in 1:07.7.

Following Thursday’s meet, the Red Storm will take on the Plattsburgh Hornets on the road Tuesday. The Blue Bombers will travel to Ticonderoga for a dual meet on Tuesday. Both meets are slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
