Three Adirondack Rednecks athletes competed in snowshoeing at the Special Olympics New York State Winter Games from Feb. 23 to 25 in Fayetteville.

The event was originally slated to be held in Syracuse, but due to the lack of snow there, the snowshoeing event was held at the Green Lakes Park in Fayetteville. The athletes ran their events at the beach on a sand surface on a cold and sunny day.

Erik Viscardo, Tyler Hochwald and Don Moore practiced weekly during the season on the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center snowshoe trails in Saranac Lake with sprint workouts in the field section.

All three competed in 50-meter and 100M races. Hochwald and Viscardo gold medaled their 100M race. The trio were joined by an athlete from Tupper Lake, Jacob Luan from the Warrior team, for the 4x100M relay. The team had the fastest time of the day for the relay and took home a gold medal for their efforts.

Other sports at the state games included Alpine skiing at Greek Peak in Cortland and figure skating and floorball at the Oncenter in Syracuse.
