USABS to induct four into its Hall of Fame

LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid native and award-winning photojournalist Kay Jones will be among four inductees into the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Hall of Fame on March 23 at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The ceremony, slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Mountain Pass Lodge, will be held in conjunction with the IBSF World Cup finals in Lake Placid. Season champions in all sliding disciplines will be crowned on the mile-long chute March 22 to 24.

When the World Cup action concludes, attention will turn to the new 55,000 square foot lodge at the base of the track. Gilbert Colgate Jr. of New York City and Richard Lawrence of West Chazy, 1936 Olympic bronze medalists in the two-man event, will also be joined by David Kurtz.

An attorney by profession, Kurtz, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was a skeleton racer who later became a member of the USA Skeleton World Cup team, team captain of the 1994 and 1998 Olympic Bobsled Teams and vice president of international affairs for the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, which is the worldwide governing body for both sports.

“USA Bobsled and Skeleton is proud to recognize those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the sports of bobsled and skeleton,” Hall of Fame Committee chairman Tuffy Latour said. “Their dedication and commitment as athletes and supporters of the USABS will be forever honored through their induction into the USABS Hall of Fame.”

The induction event is free and open to the public.
