Saranac Lake track and field teams splits first home meet

SARANAC LAKE — For the past few years, the Saranac Lake boys’ track and field team has dominated the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. But on Tuesday, the Red Storm fell victim to their first conference loss in the past four years on their home field.

While dealing with cold weather, Saranac Lake split with its opponents, topping the Ticonderoga Sentinels 118 to 10, while falling to the Peru Nighthawks 72-60. Saranac Lake’s boys coach Cy Ellsworth said the loss stings.

“Peru had some excellent performances and seemed to get better as the temperatures dropped,” Ellsworth said in a statement. “My hope is that this loss makes our guys hungrier moving forward. I’m not sure as a team, we put the work in needed to find success after our two-week Spring break and it showed on Tuesday.

“Our guys are competitive, we have great leadership, and our goal is to be the best we can be at the end of the season,” he added.

Saranac Lake’s girls’ squad also split with Peru and Ticonderoga. The Red Storm defeated the Sentinels 92-33.

“It was a great effort by Peru,” Ellsworth said. “When the temperatures dipped to 30 degrees with spitting snow, Peru’s athletes seemed to get stronger and performed well in the cold. Congratulations to the coaching staff and to the athletes from Peru.”

In the boys competition, the Nighthawks won nine events, while Saranac Lake won seven.

Mitchell Ellsworth, Carter Hewitt and Jake Kollmer each won two individual events for the Red Storm. Ellsworth won the shot put and discus, Hewitt placed first in the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump and Kollmer won the 3,200-meter and the 1,600-meter.

Kollmer was also a part of Saranac Lake’s 3,200-meter relay squad that took first place. The relay team featured, Sam Bickford, Aiden Hesseltine and Sam Madden.

On the girls side, Awa Kujabi was the only Red Storm athlete to win an individual event over Peru. Kujabi won the 100-meter dash in 13.8 seconds.

Against Ticonderoga, Saranac Lake won 10 events with Lena DeDivitis as the lone double-winner. DeDivitis claimed both the shot put and discus competitions.

Also winning on the track for the Saranac Lake was Addison Ash in the 400-meter, Michaela Gillis in the 400-meter hurdles, Cora Hotchkiss in the triple jump, Clementine Guenette in the 800-meter, Raiana Baumann in the 200-meter and Astacia Bruno in the 3,000-meter.

The Red Storm relay team of Guenette, Ash, Bruno and Zoe Carpenter won the 3,200-meter relay in 12:28.0.

Following the home opener, the Red Storm track and field teams will take on Northeastern Clinton on the road on Tuesday.
