LAKE PLACID — Competing in light snowfall and with 30-degree temperatures, the Lake Placid track and field teams fell in their season opener on Tuesday, with the Blue Bombers falling to Moriah/Boquet Valley in Lake Placid. The Blue Bomber boys fell 90-35, while the girls fared slightly better, falling 83-44.

“It was snowy, it was windy and it was cold,” Blue Bombers co-head coach Savannah Doviak said. “That obviously affects the sprinters and everyone was running in as many layers as possible so we’re looking forward to warmer days ahead.”

Despite the cold, the Blue Bombers got off to a hot start when both their boys and girls 3,200-meter relay teams edged out Moriah/Boquet Valley in the first event. The boys team of Andrew Scanio, Jackson Ruppert, Colin Francis and Aidan Fay won the race in 10 minutes, 12 seconds, while the girls team of Lilly Rother, Harley Cohen, Holly Erenstone and Kai McKinnon won in 12:39.

“I think we have a strong distance team,” Doviak said. “It’s exciting to see them work together and to push one another.”

Rother, a senior, triumphed in two individual events to pace the Blue Bomber girls, winning the 1,500-meter in 5:38 and taking first in the 3,000-meter in 13:10.3. McKinnon, a freshman, won the 800-meter in 2:57.

On the boys side, Fay, a sophomore, was a double winner claiming the top spot in the 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter. During the 3,200, Fay ran side-by-side with fellow sophomore Francis, but in the end, Fay finished just a hair faster in 14:18.12. He also won the 1,600 in 5:25.

Also for Lake Placid, Scanio, a senior, won the 800 in 2:24 to claim the fourth win for the boys squad.

While the Lake Placid distance group picked up the pace, Moriah/Boquet Valley was stronger in the sprint and field events.

Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Jackson Hooper was a double individual winner, taking first in the 100-meter dash in 12.6 and topping the long jump field with an 18’10” result. On the field side, Isabella Giovazzino and Ethan Madill won both the shot put and discus events for Moriah/Boquet Valley.

Keene freshman Liana Shambo, who competes for Lake Placid, was the lone Blue Bomber competitor to win a non-distance individual event. She not only won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:29.7, but she also won the long jump with a jump of 12’9″.

“I think (the meet) was great, obviously we just came off a two-week spring break and (Monday) was our first day on the track,” Doviak said. “It was fun just to see where the kids are at and I think we had a lot of great performances. Now we know where we have to improve to get through the rest of the season.”

With the loss, the Blue Bomber squads fall to 0-1. The two teams are slated to travel to Beekmantown for their next meet, where they will take on Beekmantown and Plattsburgh on Tuesday.
