High School Roundup: Newcomb edges out Bombers in playoffs

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid boys basketball season came to an end with a 50-44 loss to the Newcomb Huskies on the road Wednesday in the first round of the Section VII, Class D playoffs.

Just 20 days after Newcomb topped Lake Placid on its home court, the two squads found themselves in a tightly contested match.

The Huskies jumped out to 28-18 lead at halftime, but following intermission, the Blue Bombers found some momentum and brought the game within five points heading into the final quarter.

Newcomb eventually held off Lake Placid’s surge in the fourth quarter en route to a victory.

Foster Wood, a senior, paced the Blue Bombers with a team-high 14 points. Seb Cecunjanin also scored double figures with 13 points.

The Huskies’ Logan Bush scored a game-high 22 points, while Marcus Armstrong and Eric Bush chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.

With the win, Newcomb advances to the second round of the Class D playoffs. The Huskies will take on Schroon Lake today at 6 p.m.

GIRLS

Patriots 65, Red Storm 29

The Saranac Lake girls basketball team was defeated 65-29 by the AuSable Valley Patriots in the Section VII, Class B quarterfinal round on the road Wednesday night.

The Red Storm seemed outmatched early on and were outscored by the Patriots 45-9 at halftime. Saranac Lake did hit seven three-pointers in the game but couldn’t mount the comeback.

Samra Cirikovic led the Red Storm with 10 points, while Madison Moody-Durant had eight points. The pair also made two three-pointers each.

AuSable Valley’s Lilley Keyser led all scorers with 12 points on the night. Sara Richard also had a solid outing scoring 10 points, while draining two from beyond the arch.

The Patriots came into the game as the No. 3 seed while Saranac Lake was seeded sixth.
