Celebrating Paddling ADK returns

Celebrate Paddling, a month-long paddling festival, will return to the Tri-Lakes region next month.

This year, Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters, St. Regis Canoe Outfitters, Raquette River Outfitters, Mac’s Canoe Livery, the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce came together to organize events for the month of June to celebrate paddling.

Organizers focused their efforts on making events accessible and fun for locals by offering a variety of classes and paddle outings. The events are designed for a range of ages and interests.

St. Regis Canoe Outfitters will be offering a family canoe games clinic for families with children on June 20 at 10 a.m. On the schedule is the traditional trivia night for people to test their knowledge on paddling questions on June 5 at 7 p.m. Dave Cilley, co-owner of St. Regis Outfitters, will give a talk on June 3 at 12 p.m. at the Saranac Lake Free Library on his journey in researching and creating the Adirondack Paddler’s Guidebook and Map series. Jason Smith, from Adirondack Lakes and Trails, created a series of events focused on invasive species awareness.

The Saranac River and the Raquette River will have clean-up events for volunteer community service. The Saranac River cleanup is scheduled for June 12 from noon to 5 p.m., with a meetup at the Dorsey Street parking lot.

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation will offer a loon interpretation paddle on Middle Pond in Saranac Lake on June 16 at 1 p.m. Mac’s Canoe Livery will offer voyageur canoe evening paddles in their 26-foot-long voyageur canoes on June 2 at 4 p.m.

The loon center is also coordinating with St. Regis Canoe Outfitters and Adirondack Lakes and Trails to offer a morning program for third graders in the Saranac Lake Central School District and the Paul Smith’s College Vistors Interpretive Center is offering guided evening paddles on Barnum Pond on June 17 at 7 p.m.

The Adirondack Paddling Symposium will take place from June 17 to June 20. The event, which will be put on by the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, focuses on instruction with tracks for kayak, canoe, pack boat and standup paddleboards. The event will cater to beginners and intermediate paddlers looking to build stronger skills.

The Celebrate Paddling Invitational will be held at Riverfront Park in Saranac Lake on June 26. This family-friendly paddling event will include races for all ages and abilities, boat demos and a chance to purchase or sell used boats or paddling gear.

The Saranac Lake Free Library and the Saranac Lake Laboratory Museum will have a display of photographs and books. Mountain Hooves and Paws will offer a series of four classes focused on paddling with your dog every Friday in June at 4 p.m.

The Adirondack Artist Guild will feature paddle-related artwork in their window. ADK ArtRise will offer a Friday night date night on June 10, focused around “watercolors” and open studio hours on June 11 with an optional “Dip and Go” marbling demo project.

The Third Thursday Art Walk on June 16 will offer special activities that focus on paddling, such as a performance by the Canoodlers. Local restaurants will be creating special menu items, such as SLove’s creation of the “Paddling Thyme Shrub” made from strawberry, thyme, balsamic and club soda. Some local retailers, such as the BookNook, will have displays in their windows focused on paddling themes.

The Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale elementary schools and St. Bernard’s School will focus on art projects for certain age groups, drawing on the rich art history related to canoeing and guide boats in the Adirondacks.
