Whiteface hosts high school GS

WILMINGTON — Alex Tooker and Angelica DeGuardia skied to first-place finishes at Whiteface Mountain Tuesday in the Lake Placid Winter Carnival giant slalom race.

Racing featured skiers from Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, the two schools that make up Section VII, and teams from Section III.

Both winners hailed from Section III schools, with Tooker a student-athlete at Manlius Pebble Hill and DeGuardia skiing for Lowville.

Tooker beat out Saranac Lake’s Andrew Fogarty by slightly more than a second for the victory in the boys race. He turned in runs of 44.83 and 44.44 seconds for a winning 1:29:27 combined time.

Forgarty, who captured a boys slalom win the day before at Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake, came through with a runner-up total of 1:30.63 in the two giant slalom runs.

Tyler Kane of Old Forge finished third in 1:31.97, Andrew Benincasa of Manlius Pebble Hill placed fourth in 1:32.27, and Holland Patent skier Matt Brooks rounded out the top-five with a 1:34.86 combined time.

Cole VanEtten of Saranac Lake finished eighth in 1:39.94,

Red Storm boys Blake McIntosh, Will Memis and Evan Hochwald skied into 15th, 16th and 17th place.

DeGuardia put down runs of 47.08 and 50.42 seconds to win in 1:37.50. Hannah Kane of Old Forge was second in 1:39.27, and Saranac Lake ‘s Zoe Carpenter placed third in 1:39.42.

Mayah Land of the Red Storm finished fourth in 1:41.10, and Holland Patent’s Maja Helmer was fifth, just one-hundredth of a second behind Land.

Emily Kostoss came through with the top result for host Lake Placid, placing ninth in 1:47.60. Gisele Munson finished 12th for the Red Storm, and teammate Audrey Bartlett was 16th.
