Lake Placid hockey clears another CVAC hurdle

High School Roundup

PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Placid boys hockey team came through with a big win Tuesday, defeating Beekmantown 5-4 at the SUNY Plattsburgh Field House.

The matchup featured the two teams that have been on top of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference for the past four seasons.

The Blue Bombers came through late as Bjorn Kroes netted a power-play goal with 3:07 remaining in the third period to break a tie and lift the Blue Bombers to victory.

With the win, Lake Placid remained the only unbeaten, untied team in the CVAC and stayed on top of the league standings with a 4-0 record. The squads combined for seven goals in a seesaw opening period that saw the Eagles own two leads and the Blue Bombers also hold the lead on two occasions.

Lake Placid headed into the first intermission ahead 4-3 after Sean Moore scored a power-play goal with just three seconds left in the period.

The teams then played scoreless hockey until late in the third when Nathan Trombly connected with 4:03 left on the clock to deadlock the battle at 4-4.

Kroes, a senior, then came through with his late-game heroics to score the winning goal off assists from Evan Damp and Ryan Kane.

Kroes finished with two goals, while Damp, Owen Magurk and Moore each found the back of the net once in the win. Damp and Kane also finished with two assists apiece, and Moore and Hayden Plank had an assist each for Lake Placid.

“The first period was just crazy,” Lake Placid head coach Butch Martin said. “Seven goals by both teams, and then we just settled in. As the defending champions, everybody wants a piece of us, and especially Beekmantown after we took the wind out of their sails last season.

“Our guys never stopped from the drop of the puck. It was great to watch,” Martin added. “Our older guys are playing really good hockey right now, and the younger guys are gaining more and more confidence. I told the guys after the game that every one of them had their best game tonight.”

Trombly finished with two goals for Beekmantown, and Josh McCauley and Keenan Regan had a goal each in the loss.

Kamm Cassidy recorded 27 saves in nets for Lake Placid and Cole Harvey made 26 saves between the pipes for Beekmantown.

Beekmantown dropped to 2-2 in the CVAC and 4-7-1 overall with the loss. The Eagles next play Saturday at Ogdensburg.

The win was the sixth straight for the Blue Bombers, who improved to 7-4 and will have a break until their next game, which is a showdown on the road Wednesday at Northeastern Clinton.

Elizabethtown-Lewis 64, Lake Placid 49

ELIZABETHTOWN — Senior Stuart Baird did everything he could in an attempt to lead the Lake Placid boys basketball team to a win in Tuesday’s game against Elizabethtown-Lewis.

The host Griffins, however, surged to an early 12-point lead and never looked back on the way to a 64-49 victory over the Blue Bombers. Elizabethtown-Lewis owned an 18-6 edge after the first quarter.

Baird scored a career-high 24 points in the game, but the Griffins were able to answer as three players turned in double-digit performances. Sam Huttig led the way with 19 points, and Joel Morris and Thomas Celotti chipped in 17 points each.

The Blue Bombers entered the matchup following a tough 54-50 non-league loss Monday at Tupper Lake.
