TUPPER LAKE — Tupper Lake’s Michael Corneau is a calm and laid-back basketball player.

“He doesn’t worry about the moment,” Lumberjacks head coach Brian Bennett told the Enterprise last week.

When the senior guard needed one point to reach 1,000 at halftime of Friday’s home boys basketball contest, Corneau wasn’t nervous about scoring another basket.

“We still had an entire half of the basket, and I knew I was going to get at least one point,” he said.

Just 28 seconds into the third quarter, Corneau shot from beyond the three-point and became the fifth Tupper Lake athlete in the school’s history to reach 1,000 career points. The Lumberjacks defeated the Chateaugay Bulldogs 73-38 to secure its 12th straight league victory and 17th consecutive home victory dating back to 2022.

“(The win) means a lot, too, because I think we clinched us the (Section X) East (Division),” Corneau said. “We haven’t got a banner yet.”

Corneau needed 14 points to reach 1,000, but he went above and beyond that total, recording a game-high 23 points including four 3-pointers.

His 1,000th point was ruled just two points, despite both of his feet being beyond the 3-point line when he shot the basket. Corneau, who has lived and died off the three-ball for most of his varsity career, according to his head coach, wasn’t exactly thrilled with the call.

“I told myself, I’m not making 1,000 on a two-pointer,” he joked.

The home crowd went wild when Corneau netted the milestone basket. He was then greeted by his family and coaches on the court and was presented with a 1,000 Club ball.

Corneau was the second Lumberjacks boys basketball player to reach the 1,000 career point total this season. Tom Peterson achieved the milestone on Dec. 20, 2023.

“We hadn’t done it since 2008 and we’ve done it twice this year, which is just awesome,” Bennett said. “Both of those boys have been working hard since elementary school. Since then, we’ve been waiting for this year with all of their milestones, and it’s fun to watch it finally happen.”

Prior to this season, Tupper Lake only had two boys players and one girl achieve the milestone. Chris Skiff scored his 1,000th point in 1999, and Zack Durfee followed suit in 2008. Faith Bedore is the school’s lone girls athlete to achieve the feat, reaching the milestone in 2000.

As a team, the Lumberjacks dominated the Bulldogs from start to finish. The team jumped out to a 13-6 run in the opening quarter and were never really threatened the remainder of the way.

“Chateaugay is second in the east right now and they’re always a team that you’ve got to worry about,” Bennett said. “We came out and did what we needed to.”

Peterson and Garrett Pelkey joined Corneau, scoring in double figures for Tupper Lake. Petersonhad 18, while Pelkey had 14. Ashton Clark and Wyatt Godin had six points each and Tyler LaPlante chipped in with four points. Caleb Roberts scored two points in the win.

The Lumberjacks extended their lead to 35-11 in the second quarter before outscoring the Bulldogs 38-27 in the second quarter.

Jacob Johnston paced Chateaugay with 11 points, while Grant Locklin and Jake Reynolds added six points each. The Bulldogs dropped to 13-4 overall.

The Lumberjacks, which improved to 14-3 overall, are slated to take on Edwards-Knox at 7:15 p.m. on the road today.

Starting at $4.75/week.
