Storm edge out Sentinels in home opener
SARANAC LAKE — Last season the Saranac Lake softball team suffered a 24-5 loss to the Ticonderoga Sentinels. This spring, the Red Storm have already proven that they are a much stronger team than last year.
In the team’s home opener on Wednesday, the Red Storm claimed a 10-9 victory over the Sentinels, to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Saranac Lake jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third inning and from that point on they held strong defensively, despite a late-inning push by Ticonderoga.
Emma Akey, Kylee Meyer and Alex Whitson powered the Red Storm with three hits each and every single Saranac Lake batter was able to reach base at least once.
“To be able to see it all come together this early in the season — last year it took us quite a few games to get here — I’m hoping that starting this early we can carry the momentum through the year,” Red Storm head coach Gabby Lewis said.
Trailing by four in the top of the fourth inning, the Sentinels scored two runs thanks to a two-run double by Lizzie Rich. After giving up just one in the bottom half of the fourth, Ticonderoga scored two runs in the fifth to make the score 7-6.
With the Red Storm leading by just one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the team was able to load up before the trio of Meyer, Whitson and Karlie Goetz hit three straight singles, which drove in three runs to extend their lead back to four.
Lewis gave credit to the play of her outfielders — Ayla Small, Caterra Rattelle and Maddy Hathaway — in the win. All three recorded at least one putout on Wednesday.
“Even the other coach said, ‘They don’t drop a thing,'” Lewis said.
Meyer pitched into the fifth inning, striking out three Sentinels batters, while Goetz closed out the contest with one strikeout. Ticonderoga’s Stevie Montville pitched a complete game, striking out four Saranac Lake batters.
The win comes just one day after the Red Storm suffered a late-game collapse, falling 11-9 to the Northern Adirondack Bobcats.
“We had a big lead and we ended up losing it, so we needed this today,” Lewis said. “The girls did great. Our outfielders couldn’t miss a ball. Our pitchers worked their butts off and our bats came alive.”
The Red Storm is slated to host the Moriah Vikings today at 4:30 p.m.
“We’re hoping to bring this into Friday and the rest of the season for sure,” Lewis said.
