Red Storm girls defeat Saranac

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams each picked up two dual meet victories Tuesday in at meet a Dewey Mountain.

The Red Storm girls placed five runners in the top eight overall, beating Saranac Central 23-31 and AuSable Valley 20-39. Saranac Lake’s boys team took the top four spots and the seventh spot to cruise past Saranac 15-47 and AuSable Valley 16-47.

“Great win for our girls team over an always tough Saranac team,” Saranac Lake coach Bill Peer said. “It’s been a long time since our girls have defeated Saranac. It was our senior meet, so we are happy for our girls and our seniors in particular.”

Rachael Woodruff, of Saranac Central, was the top overall finisher in the girls race with a time of 18:37. Lilly Pothast, of AuSable Valley, was second in 19:07 and Saranac Lake runner Katie Samperi was third in 21:36.

Sara Traboukuolos finished fifth in 22:09, Gwen Mader was sixth in 22:12, Bella Wissler took seventh in 22:40 and Sylvie Linck placed eighth in 22:41 to round out a strong showing for the Red Storm girls.

Peter Fogarty won the boys race in 16:35, followed by teammates James Catania (16:36) in second, Micah McCulley (16:53) in third and Andrew Fogarty (16:55) in fourth. Sam Ash was Saranac Lake’s next finisher, with his seventh place with a time of 18:03.

Lake Placid’s Mike Skutt crossed the line in 17:13 to take fifth place. Teammate Max Flanigan was ninth in 18:11, James Flanigan was 13th in 18:10 and Gunnar Anthony took 14th with a time of 19:04.

The Lake Placid boys earned dual meet victories over AuSable Valley (21-37) and Saranac Central (28-28 in a tiebreaker).

The Saranac Lake boys, who are the defending Class C state champions, and Lake Placid will head to Rochester this weekend for the McQuaid Invitational.
