Grateful for our country’s immigrants

To the editor:

Steve Roberts’ commentary in the March 13 Plattsburgh Press-Republican is entitled “The economy depends on immigrants,” followed by this Washington Post headline: “The Economy is Roaring. Immigration Is a Key Reason.”

With so many baby boomers like myself retiring, we’re lucky to have people willing to work and fill in those spaces. Roberts cites the Economic Policy Institute: “Immigrants are an integral part of our labor market, filling gaps caused by demographic changes in the United States and contributing to strong economic growth.”

Roberts concludes with the Congressional Budget Office estimate that immigrants will increase our GDP by 7 trillion the next 10 years — if not blocked by a return to poorly-reasoned restrictions.

As someone drawing social security, I am grateful there are workers coming along behind me to keep the system solvent.
