Wilmington Town Board must act on STRs
To the editor:
On Nov. 21, an unfortunate event at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center was brought to my attention regarding a person being verbally berated by another person after parking his vehicle. It was to the degree that those witnessing this event felt a concern of safety and questioned if a call to the New York State Police should be placed. Thankfully, the event ended with nobody sustaining any injuries.
The topic of this incident was second-home owners and STRs in our community. It’s my understanding that the driver of the red truck was a community resident and the person receiving the verbal attack was also a community member who owns a second home in our community.
The degree of animosity in Wilmington on this topic is unreal and escalating. To think that a community resident can be going to a local venue for an enjoyable activity and be treated in such a way that those witnessing the event described it as bordering on a hate crime. Acts of violence are never acceptable behavior, no matter what side of the topic you favor. I am truly saddened that Wilmington has gotten to this degree of disjointedness.
I implore the Wilmington Town Board members to please move the STR permitting process to a priority status before another unfortunate event such as this occurs.
Respectfully submitted,
Paula McGreevy
