Truckers and corona (not the beer)

To the editor:

Truck drivers sit all day in their rigs driving. Ninety-eight percent eat at fast food truckers’ rest stops: in other words, ham and eggs and home fries for breakfast; cheeseburgers, fries, shakes, etc., for lunch; who knows what for dinner? They have fewer opportunities to exercise and thus might have poorer lung capacity than you or I. Many smoke. Many are overweight and have diabetes. Oh, and they travel all over the place — thus can pick up and be vectors for corona.

Most of all — they are absolutely essential. When THEY start to call in sick, the trucks will not run. No trucks means no food, fuel, insulin, eliquis (blood thinner) and so on. There is no plan for this scenario.

I think this might be a good time to think about what to do if truckers cannot drive their rigs. If the government is not capable of protecting us, at least here in the North Country, perhaps we can set up some sort of emergency system to distribute food and critical goods. If things go badly, this might be a useful plan.

Just a thought.
