SARANAC LAKE — Susan Alexander has been busy creating cowls and shawls for the Women’s College Scholarship Club to sell as part of their fundraising efforts this year.
She had made 17 cowls and three shawls as of late last week. Some were made from traditional wool blends and some, by request, were wool-free, made from bamboo, soy, cotton and acrylic. She says her motivation is the surprise: She’s never sure what they’ll look like since the variegated yarn she uses works up differently with each one.
WCSC Treasurer Kathy Root has been posting pictures of the finished products on the club’s Facebook page, and they have been selling almost as fast as she posts the pictures. The shawls are priced at $170 and the cowls at $40. You can email womenscsc@gmail.com to find out what’s still available.
The WCSC has been supporting the educational efforts of students for 81 years. Through a variety of fundraising efforts ranging from cookbooks and quilts to raffles and baked goods, women across the North Country have volunteered to support young women and men pursuing their college studies, and also to stimulate people’s thinking on educational, civic and social topics at monthly meetings and other events. Across the decades, WCSC has distributed 228 scholarships, including 77 continuing education scholarships for non-traditional students, for a total of $214,765. This past June, WCSC awarded six $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors.
