Pendragon premieres ‘Tracks’
SARANAC LAKE — Spilled drinks, missed calls, dreams of change and biting dialogue hit the stage at Pendragon Theatre this week with the premiere of playwright Paula B. Stanic’s new production “Tracks,” a week before the drama heads to New York City for an off-Broadway run at 59E59 Theaters.
Stanic has been working on this play for eight years and it has been through several iterations.
Jason Alan Carvell, who plays Mickey, and Laura Hooper, who plays Simone, have been with the play since the start. Pendragon Managing Director Michael Aguirre said Carvell and Hooper actually met working on this play and are now married with two children. Recently Alessandro Yokoyama, who plays Mickey’s son Jak, has joined the production.
“Tracks” is co-directed by Sarah Norris and Tabatha Gayle, who said Stanic has been working directly with them.
“She writes insane dialogue,” Gayle said.
Norris loves Stanic’s writing, particularly the very intimate two-person scenes, which she said resonate deeply with her and draw out real emotions.
Gayle said they also have a strong cast from across the pond for such a heartbreaking and dynamic script.
The play deals with subjects as large as police violence and racism and as individual as love and abandonment.
The play is set mostly in a flat in London in 2011 in the weeks after the real-life shooting by police of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old Black man, which led to protests and rioting.
As Mickey struggles to connect with Jak, a woman from his past, Simone shows up and brings up emotions, memories and pain that Mickey had long pushed down.
Gayle said she hopes the audience comes away second-guessing any immediate judgement with the people they meet.
“This play deals a lot with pre-judgements and prejudices,” Gayle said. “Just knowing and considering the inner lives and humanity of people that might live different lives than us, that might look a different way than we do, people that might express themselves differently.”
Gayle said her favorite moment of the play is a spoiler she would not reveal.
“There is a moment where some new props get introduced onto the stage, very colorful new props. And we get some really cool organic sounds, surprising organic sound. I think that the tension in that moment is really cool,” she said. “You’ll have to come see it to know what I’m talking about.”
“Tracks” is Pendragon’s second off-Broadway transfer after “Friends with Amenities” premiered in Saranac Lake last year before moving to Manhattan.
“Tracks” will hit the stage every night at 7 p.m. from Sept. 3 to 7 with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sept. 7. Tickets can be purchased at tinyurl.com/yc78y4yf.
