TUPPER LAKE — Seasoned blues guitarist Chaz DePaolo is returning to the P-2’s Irish Pub stage this week for the first time in more than three years.

The New Jersey native will land in Tupper Lake at 7 tonight (Thursday).

DePaolo, 53, has made his mark on the world of blues with a clean, contemporary sound that pays homage to old-school masters while bringing in a variety of cross-genre influences.

He’s been in the music business for most of his life. His mother was a showgirl on Broadway, and DePaolo was 15 years old when he started playing guitar.

It was in 1993 that he heard the record that would change his life.

The album was the Grammy Award-winning “Feels Like Rain” by legendary blues musician Buddy Guy. It was the first time that DePaolo remembers hearing a blues record that knocked his socks off.

“It was just — the improvisation and the stories,” DePaolo said. “The blues is a lot about the stories of struggling. It’s very cathartic.”

The New Jersey native spent the next 26 years playing the blues.

Since 1999, he’s released five records, most recently the 2016 acoustic album “Resolution Blues,” published by Smoke Tone Records.

DePaolo has played alongside the Leon Hendrix Band, a group fronted by Jimi Hendrix’s brother. He’s also shared bills with top blues artists like Leon Russell and Buddy Guy.

In 2012, DePaolo was inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame. He was also entered into the Colorado Blues Hall of Fame in 2016.

At P-2’s tonight, DePaolo plans to wow the crowd with a set including originals from “Resolution Blues,” as well as songs from his upcoming album, “Serendipity.”

“I hope people take away feelings of hope and inspiration, knowing that tomorrow gets a little better,” he said. “We all suffer the human condition. People always look for something to get through it.

“I want everybody to have fun. If I ask them if they enjoyed themselves, and they say yes, I feel I did my job.”
