TUPPER LAKE — There’s something cartoony and unbelievable about depictions of 1920s and ’30s America. Everybody apparently spoke very fast all the time, men — no matter how little money they had — were always seen wearing three-piece suits and fedoras and women were commonly referred to as “broads,” and “dames” and “chicks.”

And it was all very funny.

“This show holds up very well,” said director George Cordes. “Granted, there are things that with our modern sensibilities feel a bit outdated in terms of the way that guys talk about the dolls and the dolls talk about the guys, but it’s all treated with humor and in a good-natured way.”

Tupper Lake High School students will perform Frank Loesser’s “Guys and Dolls” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Adult tickets are $10, and student and senior citizen tickets are $7.

In early 20th-century Manhattan, Nathan Detroit searches for money and a new location to host his illegal rotating crap game. He bets big-time gambler Sky Masterson $1,000 that Sky can’t take a woman of Nathan’s choosing on a romantic date to Havana, Cuba, within 24 hours. The woman Nathan chooses is staunch and pious mission leader Sergeant Sarah Brown. Sky feigns interest in repenting his evil deeds and promises Sarah “one dozen genuine sinners” for her failing mission, though he actually winds up falling in love with her. Meanwhile, Nathan’s nightclub singer girlfriend Adelaide grows more upset with Nathan’s seedy lifestyle and his avoiding marriage after 14 years of engagement.

Nathan and Sky need to decide what’s more important: a silly bet and some money, or love.

Cordes said he chose the play because he believes Loesser is one of the greatest American composers and that he presents the story in such a hyperbolic yet accessible manner.

“It’s all part of an idealized New York City that never actually existed,” he said. “He’s got all these wise guys talking a certain way, but there’s a lot of great human nature in the play as well. The love story between the lead characters is timeless as it applies to modern human relationships.”
