“Coming Home” by Valerie Patterson

SARANAC LAKE — “Closer to the Light,” an exhibit of recent works by Valerie Patterson, will be the featured show in June at the Adirondack Artists’ Guild.

The exhibit will be on display from June 2 through July 2 with an opening from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 2.

Patterson creates watercolor paintings with psychological resonance.

She describes her work as “a continuing search for deep understanding of the human condition — fascinating in its capacity for great kindness and mercy yet also great malevolence.”

Throughout Patterson’s body of work, children repeatedly symbolize vulnerability and an unfeigned soul, connections between past and present are examined through the manipulation of black and white with color, and realistic and fantastic images may be juxtaposed to fabricate a surreal certainty.

Patterson gives voice to difficult social and political subjects in an attempt to encourage thought, emotion and dialogue.
