Sinfonietta hosts Conservatory musicians in area schools
LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid Sinfonietta is pleased to be bringing “Quintensity,” a student woodwind quintet from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, to the area March 12 through 14.
On Sunday, March 12, at 4 p.m., the ensemble will give a public performance at St. Eustace Church on Main Street in Lake Placid followed by a meet-the-artist reception. The ensemble will be in residence in the Tupper Lake and Lake Placid area schools on March 13 and 14 offering the students performances, master classes and classroom visits. This year’s in-school education program is made possible by the efforts of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta’s Education Committee with additional support from the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation and the Kevin Broderick Fund at the Adirondack Foundation.
Quintensity, a woodwind quintet formed in 2014, includes five musicians from the Eastman School of Music: Naomi Harrow, flute, student of Bonita Boyd; Elliot Lichtenberg, oboe, student of Richard Killmer; Daniel Mills, clarinet, student of Jon Manasse; Amelia del Cano, bassoon, student of George Sakakeeny (George Sakakeeny studied with David van Hoesen); and Katelyn Fridmann, horn, student of W. Peter Kurau. Quintensity is currently coached by Anne Harrow, and in the past has been coached by Chien-Kwan Lin, George Sakakeeny, and the Borealis Wind Quintet. Quintensity is a two-time winner of the Eastman Honors Chamber Music Competition and in the December 2016 winner’s recital, they performed a newly-commissioned piece by Steven Franklin, Petite Suite for Wind Quintet. Passionate about outreach, the group regularly performs volunteer outreach concerts at various venues including the Strong Museum of Play, the Arnett Library, local Rochester schools, and Cloverwood Senior Living Center. Specializing in school outreach, Quintensity has presented children’s concerts to students of all ages. Additionally, the group has performed at convocation for the Eastman School of Music, the George Eastman House, and Eastman at Washington Square. Quintensity is delighted and honored to be back in the Adirondacks for its third residency.
At the Sunday, March 12 recital the quintet will perform “Petite Suite for Wind Quintet” by Steven Franklin, “Ouvrage de Dame” by Elsa Barraine, “Wind Quintet Op. 43” by Carl Nielsen and the “Overture to Candide” by Leonard Bernstein.
