Halloween haunted happenings

I do understand that Halloween is a bit more than passing out candy and wearing a tiara. It’s just those are my favorite bits. Costumes and candy make a perfect match. If you are of a similar mindset, go straight to the end of this column, but if you like horror houses, supernatural Fright Nights, and eerie walks then I have a few creepy recommendations for you!

Lake Placid’s most recent adventure course at the Cascade Ski Center, ExperienceADKOutdoors.com, has turned into a Trail of Terror ($10) and a combo Haunted Zip Line/trail ($60) from Thursday to Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a special $45 discounted combo price for anyone in costume. (Tiaras count.)

On Friday and Saturday, the Haunted Woods behind Saranac Lake’s Tri-Lakes Humane Society’s trails at 255 George LaPan Memorial Highway will be filled with things that go bump in the night. The scare factor is set to high so this event is not recommended for children under 10. Call 518-891-0017 with questions. Admission is $5/person. Bring a flashlight or just cross your fingers that the guide will lead you out safely.

Saturday adds more thrills and chills with Lake Placid’s Haunted High School from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Admission is $7, but students under 10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. That same evening, Tuckers Farm in Gabriels, hosts its annual Fright Night through its Great Adirondack Corn Maze.

Located at the Paul Smith’s College VIC, the second annual Paul Smith’s College Haunted Halloween Walk is being held Sunday with a range of activities from bloodcurdling trail walks to an evening showing of “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The walks take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the movie kicks off at 9 p.m. Both events are recommended for ages 16 and up. People can come just to be terrified on the trail for a mere $5 and/or stay for the film for an additional $8. Between the walks and the movie are free Halloween games, treats and pumpkin painting for a gentler crowd or for anyone convalescing after being scared half to death.

If you aren’t into the high scare factor, go to Guideboat Realty’s Saranac Lake Civic Center Halloween Costume and Ice Skating Party on Saturday from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. with cider and donuts provided. Admission is $4 per person or $15 per family. Prizes are awarded for best costume.

Halloween Day brings a free torchlight walk on the Tupper Lake Junction Trail from 5 to 8 p.m., where costumed volunteers pass out candy between the Civic Center and the train depot, after the 2 to 5 p.m. Downtown Tupper Lake Treat or Treat. Stay at the train station for beverages, snacks and games while a Halloween movie plays on the big screen.

Hyde Fuel’s Saranac Lake Adirondack Carousel Halloween Party features free carousel rides and refreshments from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday during the Downtown Trick or Treat in Saranac Lake. There is also a Harvest Festival at the Harrietstown Town Hall, 39 Main St., from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. with food, games, a bounce house and more, hosted by the Saranac Lake Baptist Church.

Halloween magic will be in the air at Pendragon Theatre, 15 Brandy Brook Ave. in Saranac Lake when “Ghost Tales Volume 5: Witches Brew” haunts the stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and for those scaredy cats afraid of the dark, at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Bewitching stories from China, Germany, the American South, and Taiwan are slated to be part of the event which will also feature pieces from Monty Python and the work of Edith Wharton. A ghastly game of skill will pit two lucky audience members against each other with a fantastic treat for the winner. And last but not least at both performances audience members are encouraged to dress up and participate in a costume contest: the winner of which will be awarded one of the most incredible prizes ever bestowed upon an audience member by Pendragon. General admission tickets are $10 for ages 12 and under and $13 for all patrons over 13.

There will be a Halloween parade down Main Street in Lake?Placid at noon followed later in the day by the Lake?Placid Downtown Trick or Treat from 3 to 5 p.m.

The Lake Placid Village Police continue their 30-year tradition of providing free Halloween Day games for pre-school through fifth-grade students (3 to 5 p.m.) and a free Halloween Day Dance for middle schoolers (6 to 8 p.m.) and high school students (6 to 10 p.m.) at the Lake Placid Convention Center. So many places to be scared, so little time.
