Swedish Circus Duo Magmanus brings ‘Attached’ show to LPCA

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid Center for the Arts presents Magmanus, a Swedish circus duo, in their latest show, “Attached.”

The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and are available by calling 518-523-2512 or visiting www.lakeplacidarts.org.

“Attached,” which premiered in 2013 in Stockhold, Sweden, is a circus show about holding on and letting go.

The human domino effects, how one person’s actions can color or uncolored another person’s life, are sometimes impossible to control. These two artists are hopelessly connected – when one falls, the other flies. Their separate actions create a single rhythm, and the audience share the responsibility in what happens next, uniting total strangers in a unique experience.

In this new experimental indoor show, Magmanus explore new techniques, constructions, and the laws of gravity.

This engagement of Magmanus Company is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Magmanus Company is a Swedish circus company founded in 2009 by the Franco-Norwegian duo Manu Tiger and Magnus Bjoru.

Their vision of the company is to spread happiness and inspire their audience to follow their dreams. This is a big challenge to accomplish by performing arts, but they believe it’s important to set their goals high and they believe the combination of impressive circus skills, humor and the intensive interaction with the audience on stage is a good toolbox to deliver that message.

The contrast of their physical appearance ‘the tall and the small’ emphasizes the different nature of their personalities, which actually complement each other both on the professional and private level. It has created a strong bond between the pair, and provides the opportunity to play with this contrast to express our visions. The big difference turned out to be their best strength.

The duo’s origin story is as unique as their performances. Some years after finishing school Manu was working on a show with another artist, but found himself mainly training alone and this one particular time was for him one time too many. The same day Magnus happened to be working on his techniques in the very same hall, and since they had not met in a very long time, they greeted each other. After saying hello, Manu casually asked what Magnus was doing for the summer he got the surprising answer “I’m going to make a show with you.”

They remember a minute or two of silence, as their brains scanned through the possibilities of joining their skills and personalities. The silence broke with a simultaneous, “OK, let’s do it.”

Two weeks later, the two were in the streets performing the first sketch of the Magmanus show. The public’s reactions were so positive that they decided to create a company and a full show. Since then, Manu and Magnus have performed their show in 21 countries and on three continents; Europe, Africa and Asia, in all different kinds of venue (theatres, traditional circus tents, in the streets, at festivals and more).

Starting at $3.92/week.
