Five remain hospitalized, two in critical condition, from Boonville explosion
BOONVILLE — Two Boonville Fire Department members remain hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday and two other firefighters and a pastor also are still in hospitals following an explosion Tuesday at Abundant Life Fellowship church.
The church on state Route 12 was destroyed when a propane gas line leak ignited an explosion as the building’s furnace activated, injuring the five men, according to state police.
Firefighters and the church’s pastor, Brandon Pitts, had responded to the church just before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for a report of an odor of gas in the building.
State police said Wednesday that an investigation indicates that a propane fuel line was damaged due to “roof slumping” caused by heavy snow accumulation.
Fire department personnel were attempting to locate the electrical panel to shut off power to the building prior to addressing the propane leak.
Troopers said four people were in the basement when the furnace activated, triggering the explosion. One firefighter was on the first floor attempting to ventilate the structure and was thrown against a wall by the blast.
Boonville firefighters Nicholas Amicucci, 43, and Richard Czajka, 71, remained listed in critical condition Wednesday at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse.
Pastor Pitts, 43, and Boonville Fire Chief David Pritchard Jr., 60, both of whom were listed in critical condition at Upstate Tuesday, were listed in fair condition Wednesday.
Firefighter Allan Austin, 67, who was listed in critical condition Tuesday, remains hospitalized at Wynn Hospital, Utica. His condition was not available Wednesday.
Troopers said there is no indication of criminal activity in connection with the explosion as the investigation continues.
