Rangers have busy holiday weekend with rescues

State forest rangers had a busy holiday weekend, helping lost and injured people throughout the Adirondacks.

Town of Fort Ann

Just before noon on Wednesday, June 29, the state Department of Environmental Conservation dispatch received a call for assistance for a man on Buck Mountain.

The 54-year-old man from Lakeville, Minnesota, suffered a lower leg injury while hiking. Members of the public were assisting the man down the trail when rangers arrived. The rangers helped the man to a UTV and transported him the trailhead, where the man said he would seek medical attention.

Town of Warrensburg

On Friday, July 1, two men called 911 for assistance after becoming lost at a private campground.

The 21-year-old man from Bayshore and a 23-year-old man from Saugerties were located by a forest ranger after midnight and were escorted back to their vehicles.

Town of Keene

At 9:29 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, Essex County 911 transferred a call to DEC dispatch in Ray Brook for a man who had an injured leg on Baxter Mountain.

The 62-year-old man from Viewing, New Jersey, received first aid from the rangers and was escorted back to the trailhead, where he said he would seek medical attention.

Town of North Elba

On Sunday, July 3, a man was air-lifted off of Porter Mountain by rangers and State Police aviation.

The 46-year-old man from Manlius suffered a possible lower leg injury while hiking the mountain. Rangers reached the man shortly before 5 p.m. and stabilized the injury. The man was lifted off the mountain shortly before 6 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Franklin

A Vermontville man became lost in the woods near Onchiota this past Sunday, July 3.

The 39-year-old man was located by forest rangers and state police on private land, just 100 feet from the border of Saranac Lakes Wild Forest.

Saranac Lake EMS transported the man to a local hospital for treatment.

Town of Bolton

A 14-year-old boy from Hamilton, New Jersey, got separated from his family while hiking Tongue Mountain on July 4.

Warren County 911 received nearly simultaneous calls from both the family and the boy, who reported that he was lost off the trail.

A forest ranger responded and used the coordinates of the boy’s cell phone to located him in good health. The ranger located the boy shortly before 7 p.m. and reunited him with his parents.
