DEC warns black bears more active than usual

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is warning Adirondack visitors and residents that black bears are more active than usual due to the dry conditions. The state is currently under a drought watch.

DEC reminds people that feeding bears is always illegal and dangerous for both people and the animals.

DEC also says that homeowners should take precautions like securing trash cans and removing bird feeders.

When car camping, DEC said, keep food in coolers and in the trunk of your vehicle. Bears can recognize coolers as sources of food, so keep them out of sight. Campers should also dispose of all garbage before nightfall and keep their campsites clean.

Backcountry users should cook and clean up before dusk, as that’s when bears become active. In the eastern High Peaks Wilderness, bear canisters are required. Their use is encouraged elsewhere in the Adirondacks as well.

Outside of the eastern High Peaks, all food and toiletries should be stored in a properly hung bear bag, if not using a bear canister.
