How to keep bears away from home

The state Department of Environmental Conservation reminds homeowners that directly or indirectly feeding black bears is both dangerous and illegal, and can result in harm to humans, property and the bears themselves.

Bears are starting to emerge from their dens and seek out food. Bird feeders, garbage cans, grills, pet food and unsecured vehicles containing garbage or food can all attract bears.

To avoid issues with bears, DEC says, secure trash cans inside buildings, clean grills, and don’t burn garbage. Bird feeders should also be taken down since there is natural feed for them now. Even if your bird feeder is secure, seeds can drop to the ground attracting bears or other animals.
