KEENE VALLEY — A search is underway for a missing hiker in the vicinity of Gothics Mountain, a remote mountain at the core of the Adirondacks’ Great Range.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation’s central dispatch received a call reporting a hiker unreturned as of this morning who set on to hike the 4,736-foot summit of Gothics in the High Peaks Wilderness the day before, DEC spokesman David Winchell said. Two DEC forest rangers immediately responded to the Adirondack Mountain Reserve, the entry point the hiker reportedly took to climb the mountain, Winchell added.

After the initial assessment, two more forest rangers, an assistant forest ranger and staff from AMR joined the search effort.

Winchell added that a fourth forest ranger is on board a New York State Police helicopter that is also part of the search effort. Winchell added that at this time, DEC is not requesting assistance from the public in the ongoing search efforts.

Adirondack Mountain Club Executive Director Neil Woodworth said no club staff are involved in the Gothics search-and-rescue situation at this time.

Updates will be provided as the search efforts continue.
