SARANAC LAKE — Liam McCloskey and Makayla Schmidt have been selected as recipients of this year’s Red Wilcox Memorial Scholarship Fund.

McCloskey and Schmidt, who graduated last month with the Saranac Lake High School Class of 2017, were each awarded $500 from the fund.

The fund is named for the late Ellsworth “Red” Wilcox of Saranac Lake, who was involved in local youth sports throughout his life and umpired baseball and softball games for decades. He died in 2014.

Scholarships are awarded each year to a pair of high school seniors who plan to continue their interest in baseball and softball in college. McCloskey plans to pursue a physical education degree at either St. Bonaventure University or SUNY Brockport, while Schmidt plans to study early childhood education at either SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Cortland or SUNY Fredonia.

Red Wilcox’s son Craig Wilcox said his family appreciates the support from the local community in donating to the fund. Among the many donations this year, Dick Branch of Sturdy Supply raised $700 for the scholarship fund by raffling off a chainsaw, Wilcox said.

He also thanked the Saranac Lake Youth Baseball and Softball Association, particularly Mark Gillis and Jodi Gunther, for helping launch and manage the scholarship fund.

Donations to the Red Wilcox Memorial Scholarship Fund, made out to SLYBSA, can be sent to Craig Wilcox, 42 Maple Lane, Bloomingdale, NY 12913.
