PLATTSBURGH — At a May 22 presentation in Plattsburgh, Assemblyman Billy Jones announced that Valerie Ainsworth, executive director of Homeward Bound Adirondacks, was designated a 2025 Woman of Distinction for her community and civic affairs work in “Service to Hometown Heroes.” She joined eight other women who were honored in a range of service categories for their steadfast efforts to improve the lives of people throughout the 115th Assembly District.

Ainsworth’s dedication to veterans and individuals facing mental health challenges has had a profound impact throughout the region. Her leadership of Homeward Bound Adirondacks, her role as executive director of the Mental Health Association in Essex County, and her private counseling work all exemplify a deep commitment to healing, recovery and service. Ainsworth has been associated with Homeward Bound for over 15 years, having served as an advisor and member of the board of directors before serving as executive director for the past eight years. She has worked tirelessly to help the organization fulfill its mission of helping veterans reclaim their lives and find hope beyond the trauma of war.

In making the announcement, Jones said, “The North Country is enriched by a multitude of courageous and industrious women who tirelessly enhance this community. The Women of Distinction Awards this year honor exceptional women who exemplify unwavering dedication in uplifting ways while empowering their neighbors.”

Homeward Bound Adirondacks Chairman Mark Moeller thanked Jones on behalf of the Homeward Bound organization.

“It is so gratifying that the assemblyman has honored Valerie Ainsworth who has applied her intelligence, sensitivity and boundless energy to supporting our region’s veterans,” Moeller said. “We are fortunate indeed to have Valerie as our executive director.”

Homeward Bound Adirondacks provides crisis outreach and suicide prevention services as well as referrals for veterans needing housing, medical care and other community support. On-call transportation to medical appointments is provided along with emergency grants to veterans and their families in times of crisis.

A core part of HBA’s programming involves weekend retreats for small groups of veterans in the calming, natural environment of the Adirondack North Country. Retreats are held at different venues within the region and at a retreat site being developed on a 105-acre parcel just south of Malone. The retreat site, The Sgt. Carlton A. Clark Veterans Center, is named for a 22-year-old Vermont soldier who was killed in Iraq in 2006.
