Democrats rally behind DiNapoli’s bid for comptroller reelection

ALBANY — Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has some of the North Country’s most influential Democrats in his corner as he runs for a fifth full term in office.

On Thursday, DiNapoli’s campaign announced that five county Democratic committee chairpeople had formally endorsed his reelection campaign. He was endorsed by the chairs of Essex, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties Democratic committees.

“Every corner of New York state deserves a fighter in Albany, and I’m honored to have earned the support of so many Democratic champions in the north country,” he said. “With tariffs crushing the economy, I will always stand up for local communities, our farmers and the middle class no matter what the Trump government throws our way.”

In their statements, the five county chairs lauded DiNapoli’s 19 years as state comptroller, and said he does an excellent job of listening to northern needs.

“Tom understands how important responsible state leadership is for rural communities like ours, where towns, schools and local services depend on stability and fairness,” said Cassie Robbins-Forbus, chair of the Lewis County Democratic committee. “As Comptroller, he has been a steady hand, protecting public pensions and making sure state government works for communities of all sizes, not just downstate. Lewis County needs experienced leadership that looks out for everyday New Yorkers, and Tom DiNapoli has earned our support.”

Corey Decillis, the chair of the Jefferson County committee, lauded DiNapoli for his willingness to go after wealthy people and allies of the current President when they’ve done wrong.

“I’m supporting Tom DiNapoli because he backs working families over greedy billionaires,” Decillis said. “As state Comptroller, he’s used the power of the state pension fund to fight Elon Musk, promote corporate transparency and push for a worker’s right to organize. If we want a fighter as our state Comptroller, Tom is our guy.”

And Michael Zagrobelny, chair of the St. Lawrence County Democrats, said that DiNapoli’s handling of the state pension fund, which is now larger than ever before and stands as one of the largest public pension pots in the world, demonstrates that he is perfect for the job.

“As a retired school teacher, I know that I can count on Tom to look after my retirement,” he said. “He’s always stood in solidarity with union retirees like myself. Tom understands that the pension fund represents the retirement security of real people, not a slush fund for politicians to test investment theories.”

DiNapoli has been endorsed by dozens of local county committee chairs for re-election this year. This is the first time in many years that he’s faced a primary challenge for the job of managing the state’s finances and being an independent watchdog for all government finances across the state. Two men are currently challenging him for the job, Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle. Neither have picked up any local county endorsements as of yet.
