Saranac Lake man charged with sex crime felonies

William Strack II held in custody; police chief says state, feds bringing more charges

SARANAC LAKE — A Saranac Lake man has been charged with 12 sex crime felonies — including rape, incest and sexual abuse of a child — following what police called a “comprehensive investigation” into allegations of sexual contact with a minor and child sexual abuse materials.

William J. Strack II, 36, lived at the Algonquin Apartments at 240 George Lapan Highway. He was arrested on Tuesday and was remanded to Franklin County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

“He’s not going anywhere,” Saranac Lake Police Chief Darin Perrotte said.

Strack was charged on Tuesday with first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree predatory sexual abuse of a child, first-degree incest, first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree sexual conduct against a child, three counts of use of a child in a sexual performance and three counts of promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child. These are all felony charges. First-degree is the most severe version of each charge.

Perrotte said these allegations were under investigation for a period of time, and additional information received recently led to the arrest.

Authorities are not revealing if there were multiple victims, how the victim of the incest charge is related to Strack or who provided the information that led to his arrest, since they cannot release information that could identify a victim.

Franklin County District Attorney Elizabeth Crawford said the investigation is still ongoing and if anyone has information related to this case, or any other incident, they are asked to contact SLPD at 518-891-4422.

“Anytime we have a case involving a child, I always like to put out there that if anybody has had similar experiences, please come forward,” she said. “Sometimes they do once they see that somebody has.”

Perrotte said a search warrant for Strack’s home and electronic devices has been executed by the SLPD, New York State Police Troop B Computer Crimes Unit and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations. Perrotte said there will be additional charges from the state and federal agencies.

Perrotte said the investigation was conducted in collaboration with New York State Police’s Troop B Computer Crimes Unit and the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office.

Certain jail databases, like the “MobilePatrol” app had listed one of the rape charges as a “hate crime,” but Perrotte said that was likely an error on the app’s side.

“The Saranac Lake Police Department is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community, particularly our most vulnerable members,” Perrotte said in a statement. “We will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute those who commit heinous crimes against children.”
