Antoine tops American team in shortened skeleton race

WINTERBERG, Germany — Matt Antoine was the top American in Friday’s men’s skeleton World Cup in Winterberg, which was shortened to one heat due to heavy snow. Antoine finished seventh, just 0.06 seconds from the top six.

“The weather today was less than ideal, but this place is called Winterberg for a reason,” USA Skeleton assistant coach Zach Lund said. “The guys did a great job today. They are starting to get some momentum and confidence going and were actually really looking forward to a second run in hopes of moving up, but that’s just how racing goes sometimes.”

Antoine started his campaign for the medals with a start time of 5.08 seconds for a run of 57.34, seventh best of the heat. Flurries fell throughout the first heat and increased to heavy snow before the second run was set to begin. After several delays, the jury decided to cancel the second heat and standings from the first heat counted as the final result.

While the Olympic medalist hoped for a top six finish, Antoine has started the European portion of the World Cup season with his best result of the season. He finished eighth in both Lake Placid and Whistler, British Columbia, and was 12th in Park City, Utah.

Korean Sungbin Yun pulled out a narrow victory over Martins Dukurs, edging the Latvian by just 0.06 seconds for his third win of the season. Yun’s 4.91 start was second fastest of the race, and he crossed the finish line in 56.62 seconds. Dave Greszczyszyn of Canada took bronze in 56.88 for his first World Cup medal of the season.

John Daly posted his best result of the season this morning, clocking a 57.41 downtime to finish 10th. His 5.03 push was sixth fastest in the field of 33. Daly has had a slow start to the season, but the top 10 finish was encouraging for the two-time Olympian as he looks to qualify for his third Games.

To round out Team USA’s results, Greg West took 15th for his best finish of the season. West pushed a 5.16-second start en route to a 57.58 downtime to edge 16th place finisher Alexander Gassner of Germany by just 0.01 seconds.

World Cup racing is set to resume this morning with the women’s bobsled event.
