Storm indoor track athletes compete at states
Five members of the Saranac Lake indoor track and field team took part in the NYSPHSAA state championships on Friday and Saturday, and posted some solid results at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on March 6 and 7.
Unlike the outdoor state competition, the indoor track championships are not broken up into class size and include both private schools and schools from New York City.
Red Storm senior Gracen Foster had the top finish among her teammates, placing 16th in the girls shot put event with a toss of 32 feet, 10 inches. Foster was one of the four Saranac Lake indoor track athletes who competed at the state meet in a throwing event.
Walton-Downsville’s Grace Walley took home the girls shot put state title with a toss of 39-11.75.
In the girls weight throw competition, Trinity Martelle, a junior, placed 24th for the Red Storm with a throw of 38-2.75. Pittsford-Mendon’s Avery Brunner won the event with a toss of 53-3.25.
Saranac Lake’s boys throwing duo of Sam Duprey and Miles Frazier competed in both the shot put and weight throw events.
Duprey, a junior, had the team’s top shot put result with a throw of 45-5.25 for 20th place, while Frazier, a senior, was 21st with a toss of 45-4.50.
In the weight throw event, Duprey finished 29th with a throw of 49-4.50, while Frazier (49-0.50) was 30th.
Tri-Valley’s Kane Poje was the shot put champion with a throw of 61-3.25. Somers’ Charles Sullivan (75-11.50) took home the weight throw title.
Saranac Lake’s only non-thrower, Ryan McGinnis-Theis, placed 34th in the boys high jump finals with a leap of 5-6.00. Colonie’s Ryan Buskey won the event with a jump of 7-0.
For the Red Storm track and field program, this was the largest number of competitors they have sent to the indoor state meet since 2020. Many of these athletes are expected to return for the upcoming outdoor season.
